أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ الْأَوْدِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ سَهْمَ بْنَ الْمُعْتَمِرِ يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ الْهُجَيْمِيِّ

أَنَّهُ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ فَلَقِيَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فِي بَعْضِ أَزِقَّةِ الْمَدِينَةِ فَوَافَقَهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ مُتَّزِرٌ بِإِزَارٍ قَطَرِيٍّ قَدِ انْتَثَرَتْ حَاشِيَتُهُ وَقَالَ «عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ» فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «عَلَيْكَ السَّلَامُ تَحِيَّةُ الْمَوْتَى» فَقَالَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَوْصِنِي فَقَالَ «لَا تَحْقِرَنَّ شَيْئًا مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ أَنْ تَأْتِيَهُ وَلَوْ أَنْ تَهِبَ صِلَةَ الْحَبْلِ وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَلَوْ أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ الْمُسْلِمَ وَوَجْهُكَ بَسْطٌ إِلَيْهِ وَلَوْ أَنْ تُؤْنِسَ الْوُحْشَانَ بِنَفْسِكَ وَلَوْ أَنْ تَهِبَ الشَّسْعَ» قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ سَهْمُ بْنُ الْمُعْتَمِرِ لَيْسَ بِمَعْرُوفٍ

✧ He came to Madinah and met the Prophet ﷺ in one of the streets of Madinah, and came upon him when he was wearing an izār of Qatari cloth whose edge had become frayed. He said: "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "'Peace be upon you' is the greeting of the dead." He said: O Muhammad, advise me. He said: "Do not belittle anything of kindness that you may do, even if it is giving the cord of a rope, or pouring from your bucket into the vessel of one asking for water, or meeting your Muslim brother with a cheerful face toward him, or comforting the lonely with your company, or giving a shoelace." Abu Abd al-Rahman said: Sahm b. al-Mu'tamir is not well-known.
