أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَعْمَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَاصِمٍ عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ الْمَوْصِلِيِّ حَدَّثَنَا نَافِعٌ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ

«أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ لَبِسَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ ذَهَبٍ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَصْحَابُهُ فَشَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ خَوَاتِيمُ الذَّهَبِ فَرَمَى بِهِ فَلَا يُدْرَى مَا فَعَلَ ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِخَاتَمٍ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ فَأَمَرَ أَنْ يَنْقُشَ فِيهِ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللهِ فَكَانَ فِي يَدِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ حَتَّى مَاتَ وَفِي يَدِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ حَتَّى مَاتَ وَفِي يَدِ عُمَرَ حَتَّى مَاتَ وَفِي يَدِ عُثْمَانَ سِتَّ سِنِينَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ فَلَمَّا كَثُرَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْكُتُبُ دَفَعَهُ إِلَى رَجُلٍ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ فَكَانَ يَخْتُمُ بِهِ فَخَرَجَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ إِلَى قُلَيْبٍ لِعُثْمَانَ فَسَقَطَ فَالْتُمِسَ فَلَمْ يُوجَدْ فَأَمَرَ بِخَاتَمٍ مِثْلِهِ وَنُقِشَ فِيهِ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللهِ»

✧ “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wore a gold ring for three days. When his Companions saw it, gold rings spread among them, so he threw his away, and it was not known what he did with it. Then he ordered a silver ring and ordered that “Muḥammad, Messenger of Allah” be engraved on it. It remained on the hand of the Prophet ﷺ until he died, and on the hand of Abu Bakr until he died, and on the hand of ʿUmar until he died, and on the hand of ʿUthmān for six years of his caliphate. When the letters became many, he gave it to a man from the Anṣār who sealed with it. The Anṣārī went out to a well belonging to ʿUthmān, and it fell in. It was searched for but not found. So he ordered a ring like it and engraved on it “Muḥammad, Messenger of Allah.””
