al-Sunan al-Kubra (al-Nasa'i) 9165

✧ If a man cannot find what he spends on his wife, should he let his wife choose?

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ أَبِي رِزْمَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «خَيْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ غِنًى وَالْيَدُ الْعُلْيَا خَيْرٌ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ» تَقُولُ الْمَرْأَةُ إِمَّا أَنْ تُنْفِقَ عَلَيَّ أَوْ تُطَلِّقَنِي وَيَقُولُ الِابْنُ إِلَى مَنْ تَكِلُنِي وَيَقُولُ الْعَبْدُ أَنْفِقْ عَلَيَّ وَاسْتَعْمِلْنِي قِيلَ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ هَذَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ قَالَ «لَا هَذَا مِنْ كِيسِي»

Translation

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The best charity is that given from surplus means, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin with those you support.' The woman says: 'Either spend on me or divorce me.' The son says: 'To whom do you entrust me?' The slave says: 'Spend on me and employ me.' It was said: 'O Abu Hurairah, is this from the Prophet ﷺ?' He said: 'No, this is from my own pocket.'
