✧ The Digging of the Trench

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعْتَمِرٌ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَوْفًا قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مَيْمُونًا يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ قَالَ

لَمَّا أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَحْفِرَ الْخَنْدَقَ عَرَضَ لَنَا فِيهِ حَجَرٌ لَا يَأْخُذُ فِيهِ الْمِعْوَلُ فَاشْتَكَيْنَا ذَلِكَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَلْقَى ثَوْبَهُ وَأَخَذَ الْمِعْوَلَ وَقَالَ «بِسْمِ اللهِ فَضَرَبَ ضَرْبَةً فَكَسَرَ ثُلُثَ الصَّخْرَةِ» قَالَ «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ أُعْطِيتُ مَفَاتِحَ الشَّامِ وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأُبْصِرُ قُصُورَهَا الْحُمْرَ الْآنَ مِنْ مَكَانِي هَذَا» قَالَ ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ أُخْرَى وَقَالَ «بِسْمِ اللهِ وَكَسَرَ ثُلُثًا آخَرَ» وَقَالَ «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ أُعْطِيتُ مَفَاتِحَ فَارِسَ وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأُبْصِرُ قَصْرَ الْمَدَائِنَ الْأَبْيَضَ الْآنَ ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ الثَّالِثَةَ» وَقَالَ «بِسْمِ اللهِ فَقَطَعَ الْحَجَرَ» قَالَ «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ أُعْطِيتُ مَفَاتِحَ الْيَمَنِ وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأُبْصِرُ بَابَ صَنْعَاءَ»

✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to dig the trench, a rock appeared before us that the pickaxe could not break. We complained about that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, threw off his garment, took the pickaxe, and said: “In the name of Allah.” Then he struck a blow and broke one third of the rock. He said: “Allah is greater! I have been given the keys of Syria. By Allah, I can see its red palaces right now from this place of mine.” He said: Then he struck another blow, said: “In the name of Allah,” and broke another third. He said: “Allah is greater! I have been given the keys of Persia. By Allah, I can see the white palace of al-Mada'in right now.” Then he struck a third time, said: “In the name of Allah,” and cut the rock. He said: “Allah is greater! I have been given the keys of Yemen. By Allah, I can see the gate of San'a'.”
