✧ The Digging of the Trench

أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أُمَيَّةُ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ قَالَ
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَحْفِرُ مَعَنَا الْخَنْدَقَ وَالتُّرَابُ قَدْ عَلَا بَطْنَهُ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ «اللهُمَّ لَوْلَا أَنْتَ مَا اهْتَدَيْنَا وَلَا تَصَدَّقْنَا وَلَا صَلَّيْنَا فَأَنْزِلَنْ سَكِينَةً عَلَيْنَا إِنَّ الْأُلَى قَدْ بَغَوْا عَلَيْنَا إِذَا أَرَادُوا فِتْنَةً أَبَيْنَا»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was digging the trench with us while the dust had risen over his belly, and he was saying: “O Allah, had it not been for You, we would not have been guided, nor would we have given charity, nor prayed. So send down tranquility upon us. The foremost ones have transgressed against us. When they desire a trial, we refuse.”
