✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition, and the people were struck by severe hunger. The people asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission to slaughter some of their riding camels, and they said, 'By it Allah will deliver us.' When 'Umar b. al-Khattab saw that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was about to give them permission to slaughter some of their riding camels, he said, 'O Messenger of Allah, how will we be if we meet the enemy tomorrow as hungry men? But if you see fit, O Messenger of Allah, call the people to bring the leftovers of their provisions and gather them, then supplicate for blessing in them, for Allah will deliver us through your supplication'—or he said, 'He will bless us in your supplication.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for the leftovers of their provisions. The people began to come with handfuls of food and more than that, and the most that anyone came with was a sa' of dates. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered them, then stood and supplicated as much as Allah willed him to supplicate, then called the army with their vessels and ordered them to scoop. No vessel remained among the army but they filled it, and the like of it remained. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molars showed, and said: 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah. No servant meets Allah believing in these two but the Fire will be veiled from him on the Day of Resurrection.'
