الْحَارِثُ بْنُ مِسْكِينٍ قِرَاءَةً عَلَيْهِ عَنِ ابْنِ الْقَاسِمِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ

بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَعْثًا قِبَلَ السَّاحِلِ فَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ وَهُمْ ثَلَاثُمِائَةٍ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ فَخَرَجْنَا حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِبَعْضِ الطَّرِيقِ فَنِيَ الزَّادُ فَأَمَرَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ بِأَزْوَادِ ذَلِكَ الْجَيْشِ فَجَمَعَ ذَلِكَ كُلَّهُ فَكَانَ مِزْوَدِي تَمْرٌ كَانَ يَقُوتُنَاهُ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قَلِيلًا قَلِيلًا حَتَّى فَنِيَ فَلَمْ يَكُنْ يُصِيبُنَا إِلَّا تَمْرَةً تَمْرَةً فَقُلْتُ «وَمَا تُغْنِي تَمْرَةٌ» قَالَ «لَقَدْ وَجَدْنَا فَقْدَهَا حِينَ فَنِيَتْ ثُمَّ انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى الْبَحْرِ فَإِذَا حُوتٌ مِثْلُ الضَّرْبِ فَأَكَلَ مِنْهُ ذَلِكَ الْجَيْشُ ثَمَانِ عَشْرَةَ لَيْلَةً ثُمَّ أَمَرَ أَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ بِضِلْعَيْنِ مِنْ أَضْلَاعِهِ فَنُصِبَا ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِرَاحِلَةٍ فَرَحَلَتْ ثُمَّ مَرَّتْ تَحْتَهُمَا وَلَمْ تُصِبْهُمَا»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an expedition towards the coast and appointed Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah as commander over them. They were three hundred, and I was among them. We set out until, when we were partway along the road, the provisions ran out. Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah ordered the provisions of that army to be gathered, and he collected all of that. My provision sack had dates, and he would ration them to us each day little by little until they ran out, and nothing would come to us except a date at a time. I said, 'What does one date avail?' He said, 'We certainly felt its loss when they ran out.' Then we reached the sea, and there was a fish like a small hill. That army ate from it for eighteen nights. Then Abu 'Ubaydah ordered two of its ribs to be erected, and then he ordered a camel to be saddled, and it passed beneath them without touching them.
