✧ I heard my father Buraydah say: We besieged Khaybar. Abu Bakr took the banner and returned without victory. The next day Umar took it and returned without victory. The people suffered severe hardship and distress that day. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Tomorrow I will give my banner to a man whom Allah and His Messenger love, and who loves Allah and His Messenger. He will not return until victory is granted to him." We spent the night with good spirits, thinking victory would come tomorrow. When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the dawn prayer, then stood and called for the banner while the people were in their ranks. There was none among us with any standing with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who did not hope to be the bearer of the banner. He called Ali ibn Abi Talib, who had sore eyes, spat into his eyes, wiped them, and handed the banner to him, and Allah granted victory to him. He said, "I was among those who stretched their necks for it."
