✧ "I fear them for you." I said, "Not at all." So I put on my clothes and combed my hair, and entered upon them at midday while they were eating. They said, "Welcome, O Ibn Abbas! What brings you?" I said, "I have come to you from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, the Muhajirun and the Ansar, and from the cousin of the Prophet ﷺ and his son-in-law. To them the Quran was revealed, so they know its interpretation better than you, and there is none of them among you. I will convey to you what they say, and I will convey to them what you say." A group of them came toward me. I said, "Bring forth what you hold against the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his cousin." They said, "Three things." I said, "What are they?" They said, "One of them is that he allowed men to judge in the matter of Allah, while Allah says: 'Judgment belongs only to Allah' [Quran 6:57]. What do men have to do with judgment?" I said, "That is one." They said, "The second is that he fought but did not take captives or spoils. If they were disbelievers, their captives would have been lawful; and if they were believers, neither their captives nor fighting them would have been lawful." I said, "That is two. What is the third?" And he mentioned a word meaning: They said, "He erased his own name from the title 'Commander of the Faithful.' If he is not the Commander of the Faithful, then he is the commander of the disbelievers." I said, "Do you have anything other than this?" They said, "This is enough for us." I said to them, "If I recite to you from the Book of Allah, glorified be His praise, and the Sunnah of His Prophet what refutes your statement, will you return?" They said, "Yes." I said, "As for your statement about men judging in the matter of Allah, I recite to you from the Book of Allah that He has delegated His judgment to men in the matter of a quarter of a dirham. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, commanded that they judge concerning it. Do you not see the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: 'O you who believe, do not kill game while you are in a state of ihram. Whoever of you kills it intentionally, the penalty is an equivalent from livestock, as judged by two just men among you' [Quran 5:95]? It was part of Allah's judgment that He delegated it to men to judge. Had He willed, He could have judged it Himself, and that would have been permissible from the judgment of men. I adjure you by Allah: is the judgment of men in reconciling people and sparing their blood better, or in the matter of a rabbit?" They said, "Indeed, this is better." And concerning a woman and her husband: 'If you fear a breach between them, appoint an arbiter from his family and an arbiter from her family' [Quran 4:35]. I adjure you by Allah: is the judgment of men in reconciling between them and sparing their blood better than their judgment in the matter of a woman's private part? Have I refuted this?" They said, "Yes." I said, "As for your statement that he fought but did not take captives or spoils, would you take your mother Aisha captive and deem lawful from her what you deem lawful from others, when she is your mother? If you say, 'We deem lawful from her what we deem lawful from others,' you have disbelieved. And if you say, 'She is not our mother,' you have disbelieved: 'The Prophet is closer to the believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers' [Quran 33:6]. You are between two errors. So bring a way out of this. Have I refuted this?" They said, "Yes." "As for erasing his own name from 'Commander of the Faithful,' I will bring you what will satisfy you. On the day of Hudaybiyyah, the Prophet of Allah ﷺ made peace with the polytheists and said to Ali, 'Write, O Ali: This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon.' They said, 'If we knew you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have fought you.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Erase it, O Ali. O Allah, You know that I am the Messenger of Allah. Erase it, O Ali, and write: This is what Muhammad b. Abdullah has agreed upon.' By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is better than Ali, and he erased his own name, and that erasure did not remove him from prophethood. Have I refuted this?" They said, "Yes." Then two thousand of them returned, and the rest went out and were killed upon their misguidance. The Muhajirun and the Ansar killed them.
