✧ his saying ﷺ "Ali is your Wali after me

أَخْبَرَنَا وَاصِلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى عَنِ ابْنِ فُضَيْلٍ عَنِ الْأَجْلَحِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

بَعَثَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ مَعَ خَالِدِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ وَبَعَثَ عَلِيًّا عَلَى جَيْشٍ آخَرَ وَقَالَ «إِنِ الْتَقَيْتُمَا فَعَلِيٌّ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَإِنْ تَفَرَّقْتُمَا فَكُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْكُمَا عَلَى حِدَتِهِ» فَلَقِينَا بَنِي زَيْدٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْيَمَنِ وَظَهَرَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ عَلَى الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَقَتَلْنَا الْمُقَاتِلَةَ وَسَبَيْنَا الذُّرِّيَّةَ فَاصْطَفَى عَلِيٌّ جَارِيَةً لِنَفْسِهِ مِنَ السَّبْيِ فَكَتَبَ بِذَلِكَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَأَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَنَالَ مِنْهُ قَالَ «فَدَفَعْتُ الْكِتَابَ إِلَيْهِ وَنِلْتُ مِنْ عَلِيٍّ فَتَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ» فَقُلْتُ هَذَا مَكَانُ الْعَائِذِ بَعَثْتَنِي مَعَ رَجُلٍ وَأَمَرْتَنِي بِطَاعَتِهِ فَبَلَّغْتُ مَا أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَا تَقَعَنَّ يَا بُرَيْدَةُ فِي عَلِيٍّ فَإِنَّ عَلِيًّا مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْهُ وَهُوَ وَلِيُّكُمْ بَعْدِي»

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us to Yemen with Khalid b. al-Walid, and he sent 'Ali over another army, and he said: "If you meet, then 'Ali is over the people, and if you separate, then each of you is over his own detachment." We met Banu Zayd from the people of Yemen, and the Muslims prevailed over the polytheists, so we killed the fighters and took the offspring captive. 'Ali chose a slave girl for himself from the captives, and Khalid b. al-Walid wrote about that to the Prophet ﷺ and ordered me to speak ill of him. He said: "I gave him the letter and I spoke ill of 'Ali, and the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed." I said: This is the place of one who seeks refuge. You sent me with a man and ordered me to obey him, so I conveyed what I was sent with. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do not fall, O Buraydah, into (speaking ill of) 'Ali, for 'Ali is from me and I am from him, and he is your wali after me."
