أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَسْوَدُ بْنُ شَيْبَانَ عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ سُمَيْرٍ قَالَ قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَبَاحٍ فَأَتَيْتُهُ وَكَانَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ تُفَقِّهُهُ فَقَالَ

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو قَتَادَةَ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ فَارِسُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ جَيْشَ الْأُمَرَاءِ فَقَالَ عَلَيْكُمْ زَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ فَإِنْ أُصِيبَ زَيْدٌ فَجَعْفَرُ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَإِنْ أُصِيبَ جَعْفَرُ فَعَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ فَوَثَبَ جَعْفَرٌ فَقَالَ بِأَبِي أَنْتَ وَأُمِّي مَا كُنْتُ أَرْهَبُ أَنْ تَسْتَعْمِلَ عَلَيَّ زَيْدًا فَقَالَ «امْضِ فَإِنَّكَ لَا تَدْرِي فِي أَيِّ ذَلِكَ خَيْرٌ؟» فَانْطَلَقُوا فَلَبِثُوا مَا شَاءَ اللهُ ثُمَّ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ صَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ وَأَمَرَ أَنْ يُنَادَى الصَّلَاةُ جَامِعَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ عَنْ جَيْشِكُمْ هَذَا الْغَازِي؟ إِنَّهُمُ انْطَلِقُوا فَلَقُوا الْعَدُوَّ فَأُصِيبَ زَيْدٌ شَهِيدًا فَاسْتَغْفِرُوا لَهُ فَاسْتَغْفَرَ لَهُ النَّاسُ» ثُمَّ أَخَذَ الرَّايَةَ جَعْفَرُ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَشَدَّ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ حَتَّى قُتِلَ شَهِيدًا أَشْهَدُ لَهُ بِالشَّهَادَةِ فَاسْتَغْفِرُوا لَهُ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ اللِّوَاءَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ رَوَاحَةَ فَأَثْبَتَ قَدَمَيْهِ حَتَّى قُتِلَ شَهِيدًا فَاسْتَغْفِرُوا لَهُ ثُمَّ أَخَذَ اللِّوَاءَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ مِنَ الْأُمَرَاءِ هُوَ أَمَّرَ نَفْسَهُ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِصْبُعَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «اللهُمَّ إِنَّهُ سَيْفٌ مِنْ سُيُوفِكَ فَانْتَصَرَ بِهِ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «انْفِرُوا فَأَمِدُّوا إِخْوَانَكُمْ وَلَا يَخْتَلِفَنَّ أَحَدٌ فَنَفَرَ النَّاسُ فِي حَرٍّ شَدِيدٍ مُشَاةً وَرُكْبَانًا»

✧ Abu Qatadah al-Ansari, the horseman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, narrated: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent the army of commanders and said, "Zayd b. Harithah is over you. If Zayd is struck, then Jafar b. Abi Talib; if Jafar is struck, then Abdullah b. Rawahah." Jafar leapt up and said, "May my father and mother be your ransom! I was not afraid that you would appoint Zayd over me." He said, "Proceed, for you do not know in which of that lies good." They set out and remained as long as Allah willed. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended the pulpit and ordered it to be announced, "The prayer is congregational." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I inform you about this army of yours that has gone forth? They set out and met the enemy. Zayd was struck as a martyr, so seek forgiveness for him." The people sought forgiveness for him. "Then Jafar b. Abi Talib took the banner and pressed upon the people until he was killed as a martyr; I bear witness to his martyrdom, so seek forgiveness for him. Then Abdullah b. Rawahah took the standard and planted his feet until he was killed as a martyr, so seek forgiveness for him. Then Khalid b. al-Walid took the standard, though he was not one of the commanders; he appointed himself." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his two fingers and said, "O Allah, he is a sword of Your swords, so grant victory by him." Then he said, "March forth and reinforce your brothers, and let none of you stay behind." So the people went out in intense heat, on foot and mounted.
