أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَى بْنُ أَعْيَنَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ إِدْرِيسَ عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ عَنْ قَيْسٍ قَالَ قَالَ عُمَرُ

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ رَوَاحَةَ «لَوْ حَرَّكْتَ بِنَا الرِّكَابَ» فَقَالَ قَدْ تَرَكْتُ قَوْلِي قَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ اسْمَعْ وَأَطِعْ قَالَ [البحر الرجز] اللهُمَّ لَوْلَا أَنْتَ مَا اهْتَدَيْنَا وَلَا تَصَدَّقْنَا وَلَا صَلَّيْنَا فَأَنْزِلَنْ سَكِينَةً عَلَيْنَا وَثَبِّتِ الْأَقْدَامَ إِنْ لَاقَيْنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اللهُمَّ ارْحَمْهُ» فَقَالَ عُمَرُ «وَجَبَتْ»

Translation

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abdullah b. Rawahah, "Would you stir the riding camels for us with your verses?" He said, "I have given up composing." Umar said to him, "Listen and obey." He said [in rajaz meter]: "O Allah, were it not for You, we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed. So send down tranquility upon us, and make our feet firm when we meet the enemy." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Allah, have mercy on him." Umar said, "It has become incumbent."
