✧ I heard Abu Hurayrah say: A man came to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and said, “O Prophet of Allah, I have committed adultery.” He said, “Woe to you! Do you know what adultery is?” He said, “Yes, a man has intercourse with a woman who is not lawful for him, just as he has intercourse with his wife.” He said to him, “Go away,” and turned him away. The man passed by a man called al-Nazzal and said, “Do you not see that I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, ‘O Prophet of Allah, I have committed adultery,’ and he said to me, ‘Woe to you! Do you know what adultery is?’ I said, ‘Yes, a man has intercourse with a woman who is not lawful for him, just as he has intercourse with his wife.’ And he turned me away?” Al-Nazzal said to him, “Go back to him.” So he came to him and said, “O Prophet of Allah, I have committed adultery.” He said, “Woe to you! Do you know what adultery is?” He said, “Yes, a man has intercourse with a woman who is not lawful for him, just as he has intercourse with his wife.” He said to him, “Go away,” and turned him away. He came to al-Nazzal, who said to him, “Go back to him.” So he went back to him and said, “O Prophet of Allah, I have committed adultery.” He said, “Woe to you! Do you know what adultery is?” He said the same, and he turned him away. He came to al-Nazzal, who said to him, “Go back to him.” He went back to him a fourth time and said, “O Prophet of Allah, I have committed adultery.” He said, “Woe to you! Do you know what adultery is?” He said, “Yes, a man has intercourse with a woman who is not lawful for him, just as he has intercourse with his wife.” He said to him, “Did you insert and withdraw?” He said, “Yes.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “May you perish for the rest of the day!” Then he ordered that he be stoned and said, “Al-Nazzal has destroyed him,” three times. He was stoned, and he reached the base of a tree, lay down, and rested on his right side until he was killed. Two men from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ passed by him and said, “Look at this one who kept coming to the Prophet ﷺ and he kept turning him away, but he insisted on being killed like a dog.” The Prophet ﷺ heard them. He passed by a dead donkey with its leg raised and said, “O you two, come and eat.” They said, “O Prophet of Allah, would anyone eat from this?” He said, “What you said about your brother earlier is worse than this. By the One in whose hand is my soul, I have seen him immersed in the rivers of Paradise.” He said, meaning enjoying bliss.
