✧ When a woman gets married

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ الْجَحْدَرِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ عَنْ جَابِرٍ

أَنَّهُ تَزَوَّجَ امْرَأَةً عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَقِيَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «أَتَزَوَّجْتَ يَا جَابِرُ؟» قَالَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ قَالَ «بِكْرًا أَمْ ثَيِّبًا؟» قَالَ قُلْتُ بَلْ ثَيِّبًا قَالَ «فَهَلَّا بِكْرًا تُلَاعِبُكَ؟» قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كُنَّ لِي أَخَوَاتٌ فَخَشِيتُ أَنْ تَدْخُلَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُنَّ قَالَ فَذَاكَ إِذًا إِنَّ الْمَرْأَةَ تُنْكَحُ عَلَى دِينِهَا وَمَالِهَا وَجَمَالِهَا فَعَلَيْكَ بِذَاتِ الدِّينِ تَرِبَتْ يَدَاكَ

Translation

✧ He married a woman during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ met him and said: 'Did you marry, O Jabir?' He said: I said: Yes. He said: 'A virgin or a previously married woman?' He said: I said: Rather a previously married woman. He said: 'Why not a virgin, so you could play with her?' I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have sisters, and I feared that she would come between me and them. He said: 'That, then. A woman is married for her religion, her wealth, and her beauty. Upon you be the one of religion, may your hands be dusty.'
