al-Sunan al-Kubra (al-Nasa'i) 2928

✧ The fasting of the living from the dead and mentioning the disagreement of those who transmit the news in it.

أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ الْحَارِثِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي شُعَيْبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ أَعْيَنَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ أُمِّي مَاتَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا صَوْمُ شَهْرٍ أَفَأَقْضِي عَنْهَا قَالَ «أَرَأَيْتِ لَوْ كَانَ عَلَيْهَا دَيْنٌ أَكُنْتَ تَقْضِيهِ؟ فَدَيْنُ اللهِ أَحَقُّ أَنْ يُقْضَى» قَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ وَحَدَّثَنِيهِ سَلَمَةُ بْنُ كُهَيْلٍ وَالْحَكَمُ بِمِثْلِ ذَلِكَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ

✧ A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “My mother died owing a month’s fast; shall I make it up for her?” He said, “What do you think? If she had a debt, would you pay it? Then the debt owed to Allah is more deserving of being paid.” Sulayman said: Salamah b. Kuhayl and al-Hakam narrated to me something similar to that from Ibn ‘Abbas.
