أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي النَّضْرِ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو النَّضْرِ هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ الْأَشْجَعِيُّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ الْمُكْتِبِ عَنْ فُضَيْلٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ
كُنَّا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَضَحِكَ فَقَالَ «هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مِمَّا ضَحِكْتُ؟» قُلْنَا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ مِنْ مُخَاطَبَةِ الْعَبْدِ رَبَّهُ يَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ أَلَمْ تُجِرْنِي مِنَ الظُّلْمِ؟ قَالَ يَقُولُ بَلَى قَالَ فَيَقُولُ إِنِّي لَا أُجِيزُ عَلَى نَفْسِي إِلَّا شَاهِدًا مِنِّي فَيَقُولُ كَفَى بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ شَهِيدًا وَبِالْكِرَامِ الْكَاتِبِينَ شُهُودًا فَيُخْتَمُ عَلَى فِيهِ وَيُقَالُ لِأَرْكَانِهِ انْطِقِي فَتَنْطِقُ بِأَعْمَالِهِ ثُمَّ يُخَلَّى بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْكَلَامِ فَيَقُولُ بُعْدًا لَكُنَّ وَسُحْقًا فَعَنْكُنَّ كُنْتُ أُنَاضِلُ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مَا أَعْلَمُ أَحَدًا رَوَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ غَيْرَ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ وَهُوَ حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ وَاللهُ أَعْلَمُ

✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he laughed, then said: “Do you know why I laughed?” We said: “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “At the servant’s addressing his Lord. He says: ‘O Lord, did You not protect me from injustice?’ He says: ‘Yes.’ He says: ‘I will not accept any witness against myself except a witness from myself.’ He says: ‘Your own self is sufficient today as a witness against you, and the noble recording angels as witnesses.’ Then his mouth is sealed and his limbs are told: ‘Speak.’ They speak about his deeds. Then he is allowed to speak and says: ‘Away with you, and curse you; it was on your behalf that I contended.’” Abu ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: I know of no one who narrated this ḥadīth from Sufyān except al-Ashjaʿī, and it is a rare ḥadīth. And Allah knows best.
