أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ سَيْفٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ وَأَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَحْبُوبٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ
انْطَلَقَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي طَائِفَةٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ عَامِدِينَ إِلَى سُوقِ عُكَاظٍ وَقَدْ حِيلَ بَيْنَ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ وَأُرْسِلَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الشُّهُبُ فَرَجَعَتِ الشَّيَاطِينُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِمْ فَقَالُوا حِيلَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَأُرْسِلَتْ عَلَيْنَا الشُّهُبُ فَقَالَ مَا حَالَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ إِلَّا شَيْءٌ حَدَثَ فَاضْرِبُوا مَشَارِقَ الْأَرْضِ وَمَغَارِبَهَا فَانْظُرُوا مَا هَذَا الَّذِي حَالَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ؟ فَانْطَلَقُوا يَضْرِبُونَ مَشَارِقَ الْأَرْضِ وَمَغَارِبَهَا يَبْتَغُونَ مَا هَذَا الَّذِي حَالَ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ فَانْصَرَفَ أُولَئِكَ النَّفَرِ الَّذِينَ تَوَجَّهُوا نَحْوَ تِهَامَةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُو بِنَخْلَةَ عَامِدًا إِلَى سُوقِ عُكَاظٍ وَهُو يُصَلِّي بِأَصْحَابِهِ صَلَاةَ الْفَجْرِ فَلَمَّا سَمِعُوا الْقُرْآنَ اسْتَمَعُوا لَهُ وَقَالُوا هَذَا وَاللهِ الَّذِي حَالَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ خَبَرِ السَّمَاءِ فَهُنَاكَ حِينَ رَجَعُوا إِلَى قَوْمِهِمْ فَقَالُوا يَا قَوْمَنَا {إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْآنًا عَجَبًا يَهْدِي إِلَى الرُّشْدِ فَآمَنَّا بِهِ وَلَنْ نُشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَا أَحَدًا} [الجن 2] فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ {قُلْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّهُ اسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِنَ الْجِنِّ} [الجن 1] وَإِنَّمَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْهِ قَوْلُ الْجِنِّ اللَّفْظُ لِعَمْرٍو

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out with a group of his companions heading for the market of ʿUkāẓ, and the devils had been prevented from hearing the news of heaven, and shooting stars were sent against them. The devils returned to their people and said: “We have been prevented from hearing the news of heaven, and shooting stars have been sent against us.” They said: “Nothing has prevented you from the news of heaven except something that has happened. So travel the east of the earth and its west and see what this is that has prevented you from the news of heaven.” So they set out traveling the east and west of the earth seeking what had prevented them from the news of heaven. Those who headed toward Tihāmah turned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was at Nakhlah heading for the market of ʿUkāẓ, praying the dawn prayer with his companions. When they heard the Qurʾān, they listened to it and said: “By Allah, this is what has prevented you from the news of heaven.” That was when they returned to their people and said: O our people, {Indeed we have heard a wondrous Qurʾān, guiding to right conduct, and we have believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord} [al-Jinn 1–2]. Then Allah revealed: {Say: It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn listened} [al-Jinn 1]. And indeed what was revealed to him was the speech of the jinn. The wording is that of ʿAmr.
