Sūrat al-Ḥashr

أَخْبَرَنَا هَنَّادُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ عَنْ وَكِيعٍ عَنْ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ غَزْوَانَ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ
أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ بَاتَ بِهِ ضَيْفٌ فَلَمْ يَكُنْ عِنْدَهُ إِلَّا قُوتُ صِبْيَانِهِ فَقَالَ لِامْرَأَتِهِ نَوِّمِي الصِّبْيَةَ وَأَطْفِئِي السِّرَاجَ وَقَرِّبِي لِلضَّيْفِ مَا عِنْدَكِ فَنَزَلَتْ {وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ بِهِمْ خَصَاصَةٌ} [الحشر 9]

✧ that a man of the Anṣār had a guest stay overnight with him, and he had nothing but the food of his children. He said to his wife, “Put the children to sleep, extinguish the lamp, and bring near to the guest what you have.” So it was sent down: {And they give preference over themselves, even though they are in privation} [al-Ḥashr 9].
