أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُقَيْلٍ أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ ثَابِتٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُغَفَّلٍ الْمُزَنِيُّ قَالَ

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ بِالْحُدَيْبِيَةِ فِي أَصْلِ الشَّجَرَةِ الَّتِي قَالَ اللهُ وَكَأَنِّي بِغُصْنٍ مِنْ أَغْصَانِ تِلْكَ الشَّجَرَةِ عَلَى ظَهْرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَرَفَعْتُهُ عَنْ ظَهْرِهِ وَعَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَسُهَيْلُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ اكْتُبْ بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ فَأَخَذَ سُهَيْلٌ يَدَهُ فَقَالَ مَا نَعْرِفُ الرَّحْمَنَ الرَّحِيمَ اكْتُبْ فِي قَضِيَّتِنَا مَا نَعْرِفُ فَقَالَ «اكْتُبْ بِاسْمِكَ اللهُمَّ» هَذَا مَا صَالِحَ عَلَيْهِ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللهِ أَهْلَ مَكَّةَ فَأَمْسَكَ بِيَدِهِ فَقَالَ فَقَدْ ظَلَمْنَاكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ رَسُولًا اكْتُبْ فِي قَضِيَّتِنَا مَا نَعْرِفُ فَقَالَ اكْتُبْ هَذَا مَا صَالِحَ عَلَيْهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ وَأَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ قَالَ فَكَتَبَ فَبَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا ثَلَاثُونَ شَابًّا عَلَيْهِمُ السِّلَاحُ فَثَارُوا فِي وُجُوهِنَا فَدَعَا عَلَيْهِمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَخَذَ اللهُ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ فَقُمْنَا إِلَيْهِمْ فَأَخَذْنَاهُمْ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «هَلْ جِئْتُمْ فِي عَهْدِ أَحَدٍ أَوْ هَلْ جَعَلَ لَكُمْ أَحَدٌ أَمَانًا؟ » فَقَالُوا لَا فَخَلَّى سَبِيلَهُمْ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {وَهُوَ الَّذِي كَفَّ أَيْدِيَهُمْ عَنْكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ} [الفتح 24] إِلَى {بَصِيرًا} [النساء 58]

✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Hudaybiyyah at the base of the tree that Allah mentioned, and it was as if a branch of that tree was on the back of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I lifted it from his back. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib and Suhayl b. ʿAmr were in front of him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Write: ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.’” Suhayl took his hand and said: “We do not know ‘the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.’ Write in our document what we know.” He said: “Write: ‘In Your name, O Allah.’ This is what Muḥammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon with the people of Makkah.” Suhayl held his hand and said: “We have wronged you if you are a Messenger. Write in our document what we know.” He said: “Write: ‘This is what Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib has agreed upon’ – and I am the Messenger of Allah.” He said: So he wrote. While we were like that, thirty young men bearing weapons came out against us and rushed toward our faces. The Prophet ﷺ supplicated against them, and Allah seized their sight. We rose against them and captured them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: “Have you come under the protection of anyone, or has anyone granted you safety?” They said: “No.” So he released them. Then Allah, exalted is He, revealed: {And it is He who restrained their hands from you and your hands from them} [al-Fath: 24] up to {All-Seeing} [al-Nisa’: 58].
