✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition, and the people were afflicted with severe hunger. The people asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission to slaughter some of their riding camels, and they said: “May Allah sustain us through them.” When Umar b. al-Khattab saw that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was about to grant them permission to slaughter some of their riding camels, he said: “O Messenger of Allah, how would we fare if we meet the enemy hungry and on foot? But if you see fit, O Messenger of Allah, to call the people to bring the remnants of their provisions and gather them, then pile them up, then supplicate Allah for blessing in them.” So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for their provisions, and the people began to come, bringing a handful of food or more, and the most any of them brought was a sa' of dates. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered them, then stood and supplicated as much as Allah willed that he supplicate, then he called the army with their vessels and ordered them to scoop. No vessel remained in the army except that they filled it, and the like of it remained. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molars showed, then said: “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah. No servant who believes in these two will meet Allah except that the Fire will be veiled from him on the Day of Resurrection.”
