أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الضَّحَّاكُ بْنُ مَخْلَدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي جَعْفَرُ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ سَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ
كُنْتُ أَنَا وَقُثَمُ وَعُبَيْدُ اللهِ نَلْعَبُ فَجَاءَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «احْمِلْ هَذَا» ثُمَّ قَالَ «احْمِلْ هَذَا» فَحَمَلَ قُثَمُ خَلْفَهُ وَلَمْ يَسْتَحِي مِنْ عَمِّهِ الْعَبَّاسِ وَكَانَ عُبَيْدُ اللهِ أَحَبَّ إِلَى الْعَبَّاسِ مِنْ قُثَمَ وَمَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ وَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ اخْلُفْ جَعْفَرًا فِي وَلَدِهِ» قُلْتُ مَا فَعَلَ قُثَمُ؟ قَالَ اسْتُشْهِدَ قُلْتُ اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ كَانَ أَعْلَمَ بِالْخِيَرَةِ قَالَ أَجَلْ

✧ I was playing with Qutham and Ubaidullah when the Prophet ﷺ came and said, "Carry this." Then he said, "Carry this." Qutham carried it behind him without feeling ashamed before his uncle Abbas. And Ubaidullah was more beloved to Abbas than Qutham, so he wiped his head three times and said, "O Allah, make Jafar succeed in his offspring." I asked, "What happened to Qutham?" He said, "He was martyred." I said, "Allah and His Messenger knew best." He said, "Indeed."
