that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he had mounted his camel, setting out on a journey, would say “Allāhu Akbar” three times, then say: subḥāna alladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā, wa-mā kunnā lahu muqrinīn, wa-innā ilā rabbinā la-munqalibūn. allāhumma innā nasʾaluka fī safarinā hādhā al-birra wa-l-taqwā, wa-min al-ʿamali mā tarḍā. allāhumma hawwin ʿalaynā safaranā hādhā, wa-ṭwi ʿannā buʿdah. allāhumma anta al-ṣāḥibu fī al-safar, wa-l-khalīfatu fī al-ahl. allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min waʿthāʾi al-safar, wa-kaʾābati al-manẓar, wa-sūʾi al-munqalabi fī al-māli wa-l-ahl “Glory be to the One who has subjected this to us, for we could never have managed it on our own; and indeed, to our Lord we shall surely return. O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us, and fold up its distance for us. O Allah, You are the Companion in travel and the Successor over the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from a gloomy sight, and from a bad return in wealth and family.” And when he returned, he would say them as well, adding: “Returning, repenting, worshipping, praising our Lord,” ˹after the beginning ayah of the Quran in this dua˺.
