I was present at the house when ʿUthmān ؓ looked out at them and said: "I adjure you by God, do you know that the Messenger of God ﷺ came to Medina and there was no sweet water in it except the well of Rūmah, and he said: 'Who will buy the well of Rūmah and put his bucket in it along with the buckets of the Muslims, for something better than it in Paradise?' So I bought it from the core of my wealth and put my bucket in it along with the buckets of the Muslims, and today they prevent me from drinking from it, so that I would have to drink sea water?" They said: "O God, yes." He said: "I adjure you by God and Islam, do you know that I equipped the army of hardship from the core of my wealth?" They said: "O God, yes." He said: "I adjure you by God and Islam, do you know that the mosque became too narrow for its people, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Who will buy the plot of the family of so-and-so and add it to the mosque, for something better than it in Paradise?' So I bought it from the core of my wealth and added it to the mosque, and today you prevent me from praying two rakʿahs in it?" They said: "O God, yes." Then he said: "I adjure you by God and Islam, do you know that the Messenger of God ﷺ was on Thabīr of Mecca, and with him were Abū Bakr, ʿUmar and I, and the mountain shook until its stones fell to the base, and the Messenger of God ﷺ struck it with his foot and said: 'Be still, for upon you are only a Prophet, a truthful one (ṣiddīq), and two martyrs'?" They said: "O God, yes." He said: "God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest! By the Lord of the Kaʿbah, they have testified for me that I am a martyr," three times.
