✧ The prohibition of affectation and hardship in worship

وَحَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، ثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ، ثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ سُوَيْدٍ الْعَدَوِيُّ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ يُقَالُ لَهُ جَبَلَةُ

أَنَّ شَابًّا تَعَبَّدَ عَلَى عَهْدِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَانْطَلَقَ أَبُوهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ ابْنِي قَدْ أَجْهَدَ نَفْسَهُ فِي الْعِبَادَةِ، فَقَالَ ﷺ: مُرْهُ فَلْيَرْبَعْ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ

Translation

✧ A young man devoted himself to worship during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, so his father went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “My son has exhausted himself in worship.” He ﷺ said, “Command him to be moderate with himself.”
