✧ Prostration of recitation during prayer and otherwise, and the permissibility of bowing at the prostration of recitation

وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ: أَخْبَرَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ، عَنْ رَجُلَيْنِ: كِلَاهُمَا خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ قَالَ:

إِنَّ أَحَدَهُمَا سَجَدَ فِي إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انْشَقَّتْ، أَوْ فِي اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ، وَلَمْ يَسْجُدِ الْآخَرُ، فَكَانَ الَّذِي سَجَدَ أَفْضَلَ مِنَ الَّذِي لَمْ يَسْجُدْ، فَإِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ عُمَرُ ؓ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ عُمَرَ ؓ

Translation

✧ One of them prostrated in [the recitation of] 'When the sky is split asunder' or in 'Iqraʾ bi-smi Rabbik,' while the other did not prostrate. The one who prostrated was better than the one who did not prostrate. If it was not ʿUmar ؓ, then he [the one who prostrated] is better than ʿUmar ؓ.
