✧ Concerning His saying, Exalted is He: 'And those who feared their Lord will be driven to Paradise in groups' (Q 39:73), until when they come to it, they find at the gate of Paradise a tree. (Ma'mar said:) From its trunk, (and al-Thawri said:) from its roots, there spring two springs. They betake themselves to one of them, and it is as if they were commanded to do so. (Ma'mar said:) They bathe in it, (and al-Thawri said:) they perform ablution from it, and after that their heads never become disheveled and their skins never change, as if they had anointed themselves with oil, and the radiance of bliss shines upon them. Then they betake themselves to the other spring and drink from it, and it purifies their insides, so that no impurity, harm, or evil remains in their bellies but that it comes out. The angels meet them at the gate of Paradise: 'Peace be upon you; you have become good, so enter it to abide eternally' (Q 39:73). And the youths meet them, like hidden pearls, like scattered pearls, telling them what Allah, Exalted is He, has prepared for them. They surround them as the youths of the people of this world surround a beloved one who returns from absence, saying, 'Receive good tidings: Allah has prepared for you such-and-such, and has prepared for you such-and-such.' Then one of those youths goes to a wife from among his wives and says, 'So-and-so has come,' using the name by which he was called in this world. Joy overwhelms her until she stands on the threshold of her door and says, 'Did you see him?' He said, 'Then he comes and looks at the foundation of his building, which is upon boulders of pearl, among green, yellow, and red of every color. Then he sits, and behold, carpets are spread out, cushions are arranged, and goblets are placed. Then he raises his head and looks at the ceiling of his building, and were it not that Allah, Exalted is He, (Ma'mar said:) had decreed that for him, and al-Thawri said: had subjected that for him, it would nearly take away his sight. It is but like lightning. Then he says, "Praise be to Allah who guided us [to this]" (Q 7:43).'
