فَيَقُولُ: لَا أَدْرِي، فَيَقُولَانِ لَهُ: لَا دَرَيْتَ وَلَا تَلَيْتَ، قَالَ: فَيَضْرِبَانِهِ ضَرْبَةً يَطِيرُ شَرَارُهَا فِي قَبْرِهِ، ثُمَّ ✧ He said: "Go to My friend and bring him to Me, for I have tested him with prosperity and adversity and found him where I love. Bring him to Me, that I may give him rest." He said: "The Angel of Death will go to him, accompanied by five hundred angels. With them are shrouds and embalming perfume from Paradise, and with them are bundles of basil: the stem of each basil plant is one, and at its head are twenty colors, each color having a scent different from its companion's. With them is white silk containing pungent musk. He said: "The Angel of Death will sit at his head, and the angels will surround him. Each of them will place his hand on a limb of his body, and that white silk and pungent musk will be spread beneath his chin. A door to Paradise will be opened for him, and his soul will be soothed at that moment by the delights of Paradise—sometimes by its spouses, sometimes by its clothing, and sometimes by its fruits—just as a child's family soothes him when he cries. His spouses will be eager for him at that moment with great eagerness." He said: "The soul will emerge." (Al-Bursani said: he means to come out quickly because of what it sees of what it loves.) He said: "The Angel of Death will say: 'Come out, O good soul, to lote trees with thorns removed, and clustered plantains, and extended shade, and flowing water.'" He said: "The Angel of Death is gentler with him than a mother with her child, knowing that this soul is beloved to its Lord, so he seeks gentleness for it, out of love for its Lord and desiring the Lord's pleasure with it. So his soul will be drawn out as a hair is drawn from dough." He said: "Allah, Exalted, said: 'Those whom the angels take in a state of goodness' [Surah al-Nahl:32]. And He, Mighty and Majestic, said: 'Then if he is of those brought near, then rest and basil and a garden of bliss' [Surah al-Waqi'ah:88-89]." He said: "'Rest' from the hardship of death, and 'basil' with which he is received, and 'a garden of bliss' that faces him." He said: "When the Angel of Death takes his soul, the soul will say to the body: 'May Allah reward you well on my behalf. You were quick in me toward obedience to Allah, Exalted, and slow in me away from disobedience to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. You have been saved and you have saved.' He said: "The body will say the like of that to the soul." He said: "The places of the earth where he used to obey Allah, Exalted, will weep over him, and every gate of heaven through which his deeds ascended and his provision descended will weep for forty years." He said: "When the Angel of Death takes his soul, the five hundred angels will stay by his body. No son of Adam will turn him to one side except the angels turn him before them, and they will cover him with shrouds before the shrouds of the sons of Adam, and with embalming perfume before the embalming perfume of the sons of Adam. From the door of his house to the door of his grave, two rows of angels will stand, receiving him with prayers for forgiveness." He said: "At that, Iblis will cry out with a cry from which the bones of some of his body will crack, and he will say to his troops: 'Woe to you! How did this servant escape from you?' He said: "They will say: 'This servant was protected.'" He said: "When the angel ascends with his soul to the heaven, Jibril ﷺ will meet him with seventy thousand angels, each bringing him a glad tiding from his Lord different from his companion's." He said: "When the Angel of Death reaches the Throne with his soul, the soul will fall prostrate, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will say to the Angel of Death: 'Go with the soul of this servant of Mine and place it among lote trees with thorns removed, and clustered plantains, and extended shade, and flowing water.'" He said: "When he is placed in his grave, prayer will come to him and be on his right, fasting will come and be on his left, the Qur'an and remembrance will come and be at his head, his walking to prayer will come and be at his feet, and patience will come and be in a corner of the grave." He said: "Then Allah, Exalted, will send a punishment from the punishments, and it will approach him from his right, and prayer will say: 'Get back! By Allah, he was persistent all his life, and he has only now found rest when he was placed in his grave.' He said: "It will approach him from his left, and fasting will say the like of that. Then it will approach him from his head, and the Qur'an and remembrance will say the like of that. Then it will approach him from his feet, and his walking to prayer will say the like of that." He said: "The punishment will not approach him from any direction seeking a way except it will find the friend of Allah, Exalted, having blocked its path." He said: "The punishment will then retreat and leave, and patience will say to the other deeds: 'As for me, nothing prevented me from undertaking the matter myself except that I looked at what you have. If you were unable, I would be his companion. But since you have sufficed for him, I am a reserve for him at the bridge and the scale.'" He said: "Allah, Exalted, will send two angels whose eyes are like flashing lightning, whose voices are like crashing thunder, whose fangs are like cattle horns, and whose breaths are like flames. They tread in their hair, and between the shoulders of each of them is a distance of such and such. Mercy and compassion have been removed from them. They are called Munkar and Nakir. In the hand of each of them is a sledgehammer; if Rabi'ah and Mudar gathered against it, they could not lift it." He said: "They will say to him: 'Sit up.' He said: "He will sit up straight, and his shrouds will fall to his waist." He said: "They will say to him: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?'" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, who can speak at that time when you describe the two angels as you describe?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "'Allah keeps firm those who believe with the firm word in this world and the Hereafter, and Allah sends astray the wrongdoers, and Allah does what He wills' [Surah Ibrahim:27]." He said: "He will say: 'Allah is my Lord alone, no partner has He. My religion is Islam, which the angels profess, and my Prophet is Muhammad ﷺ, the seal of the prophets.'" He said: "They will say: 'You have spoken the truth.'" He said: "They will push the grave and widen it: before him forty cubits, behind him forty cubits, on his right forty cubits, on his left forty cubits, and at his head forty cubits." He said: "They will widen it forty cubits." (Al-Bursani said: I think he said: "and forty cubits surrounding him.") Then they will say to him: "Look above you." He said: "He will look above him, and there will be a door opened to Paradise. They will say to him: 'O friend of Allah, this is your abode since you obeyed Allah, Exalted.'" He said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'By Him in Whose hand is my soul, at that moment a joy will reach his heart that will never turn back.' Then it will be said to him: "Look below you." He will look below him, and there will be a door opened to the Fire. They will say to him: 'O friend of Allah, this is your abode had you disobeyed Allah, but you are saved; He has deferred it for you.'" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "By Him in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, at that moment a joy will reach his heart that will never increase." He said: "'A'ishah ؓ said: 'Seventy-seven doors to Paradise will be opened for him, and its breeze and coolness will come to him until Allah, Blessed and Exalted, resurrects him.'" This chain goes to Anas b. Malik, from Tamim al-Dari, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says to the Angel of Death: 'Go to My enemy and bring him to Me, for I have expanded My provision for him and clothed him with My favor, but he insisted on disobeying Me. Bring him to Me that I may take vengeance on him.'" He said: "The Angel of Death will go to him in the most horrible form anyone has ever seen, with twelve eyes, and with him is an iron spit with many thorns, and with him are five hundred angels. With them are copper and coals from the coals of Hell, and with them are whips of fire, their softness the softness of whips, but they are blazing fire." He said: "The Angel of Death will strike him with that spit a blow by which the base of every thorn of that spit disappears into the base of every hair, vein, and nail. Then he will twist it severely and pull his soul out from the nails of his feet and cast it into his heels." He said: "The enemy of Allah will be intoxicated at that with a swoon, and the Angel of Death will give him respite, and the angels will strike his face and back with those whips. Then the angels will shake him, and his soul will be pulled from his heels and cast into his knees." He said: "Then the enemy of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will be intoxicated at that with a swoon, and the Angel of Death will give him respite." He said: "The angels will strike his face and back with those whips, and the Angel of Death will shake him, and his soul will be pulled from his knees and cast into his waist." He said: "Then the enemy of Allah will be intoxicated at that with a swoon, and the Angel of Death will give him respite, and the angels will strike his face and back with those whips." He said: "Thus it will continue until his chest and throat, then the angels will spread the copper and coals of Hell beneath his chin, and the Angel of Death will say: 'Come out, O accursed, cursed soul, to the scorching wind of Hell, and to the shade of black smoke, neither cool nor noble.'" He said: "When the Angel of Death takes his soul, the soul will say to the body: 'May Allah reward you with evil on my behalf. You were slow in me toward obedience to Allah, Exalted, and quick in me toward disobedience to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. You have perished and caused my destruction.'" He said: "The body will say the like of that to the soul, and the places of the earth where he used to disobey Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will curse him." He said: "The troops of Iblis will go to give him glad tidings that they have brought a servant from the children of Adam to the Fire. When he is placed in his grave, his grave will be constricted until his ribs interlace, the right entering the left and the left entering the right. Allah, Exalted, will send to him serpents like the necks of camels, which will seize him by his nose and the big toes of his feet and bite him until they meet in his middle. Allah, Exalted, will send two angels whose eyes are like flashing lightning, whose voices are like crashing thunder, whose fangs are like cattle horns, and whose breaths are like flames. Who is your Prophet?'" He will say: "I do not know." They will say to him: "May you never know and never be guided." He said: "They will strike him a blow whose sparks fly in his grave. Then they will return and say to him: 'Look above you.' He will look, and there will be a door opened from Paradise. They will say to him: 'O enemy of Allah, this is your abode had you obeyed Allah, Mighty and Majestic.'" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "By Him in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, at that moment a regret will reach his heart that will never increase." He said: "They will say to him: 'Look below you.' He will look, and there will be a door opened to the Fire. They will say: 'O enemy of Allah, this is your abode since you disobeyed Allah, Mighty and Majestic.'" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "By Him in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, at that moment a regret will reach his heart, and it will never increase." 'A'ishah ؓ said: "Seventy-seven doors to the Fire will be opened for him, and its heat and scorching wind will come to him until Allah, Blessed and Exalted, resurrects him to it." This is a hadith of astonishing context, and it is a witness to much of what is established in the long famous hadith of al-Bara' ؓ. However, this chain is strange; we know of no one who narrated from Anas, from Tamim al-Dari ؓ except through this route. Yazid al-Raqashi is very weak in memory and has many rejected narrations; he did not control the chain, so he attributed to Anas ؓ everything he heard from others. Below him also are those like him or weaker. (216) The hadith of Abu Sa'id ؓ regarding the signs of the Hour has already been mentioned. In the Dar al-Asimah edition: (he resurrects), but what is established is from Ithaf al-Busiri, which matches the context.
