Translation
✧ We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to a funeral. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat at the grave and we sat around him, as if birds were on our heads, while the grave was being dug for the deceased. He said: "I seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave," three times. Then he said: "When the believer is at the departure from this world and the approach of the Hereafter, angels with faces like the sun descend to him, each carrying a shroud and embalming perfume. They sit at a distance from him as far as the eye can see. When his soul departs, every angel between heaven and earth prays over him, as does every angel in heaven, and the gates of heaven are opened for him. There is no group at a gate but they supplicate Allah that his soul be taken up through them. When his soul is taken up through them, they say: 'O Lord, Your servant so-and-so.' He says: 'Return him, for I have promised them that from it I created them, and into it I shall return them, and from it I shall bring them forth another time.' He hears the sound of his companions' sandals when they turn away from him. Then a visitor comes to him and says: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?' He says: 'My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad ﷺ.' He rebukes him and says: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?' This is the last trial presented to the believer. That is when He says: 'Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in the life of this world and in the Hereafter.' He says: 'My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad ﷺ.' He says to him: 'You have spoken the truth.' Then a visitor with a beautiful face, pleasant fragrance, and fine clothes comes to him and says: 'Rejoice in honor from Allah and everlasting bliss.' He says: 'May Allah give you good tidings. Who are you?' He says: 'I am your righteous deeds. By Allah, you were quick in obeying Allah and slow in disobeying Him. May Allah reward you well.' Then a door to Paradise and a door to Hell are opened for him, and it is said: 'This would have been your abode had you disobeyed Allah; Allah would have placed you in this one.' When he sees what is in Paradise, he says: 'O Lord, hasten the Hour, so that I may return to my family and wealth.' It is said: 'Be still.' As for the disbeliever, when he is at the departure from this world and the approach of the Hereafter, stern and harsh angels descend to him and extract his soul as a large many-pronged skewer is pulled out of wet wool, and his breath is drawn out with his veins. When his soul departs, every angel between heaven and earth curses him, and every angel in heaven curses him, and the gates of heaven are closed. There is no group at a gate but they supplicate that his soul not be taken up through them. When his soul is taken up, they say: 'Our Lord, this is Your servant so-and-so.' He says: 'Return him, for I have promised them that from it I created them, and into it I shall return them, and from it I shall bring them forth another time.' He said: "He hears the sound of his companions' sandals when they turn away from him. Then a visitor comes to him and says: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?' He says: 'My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad ﷺ.' He rebukes him severely and says: 'Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?' He says: 'I do not know.' He says: 'You did not know, nor did you recite.' Then a visitor with ugly clothes and a foul smell comes to him and says: 'Rejoice in disgrace from Allah and everlasting punishment.' He says: 'And you, may Allah give you evil tidings. Who are you?' He says: 'I am your evil deeds. You were slow to obey Allah and quick to disobey Him. May Allah reward you with evil.' Then a blind, deaf, and mute creature is appointed for him, holding a sledgehammer; if it struck a mountain with it, the mountain would turn to dust. He strikes him once and he becomes dust, then Allah restores him as he was, and he strikes him another time, and he cries out with a cry that everything hears except the two heavy species (jinn and humans). Then a door to Hell is opened for him, and a bed of fire is spread for him."
