✧ I came to Abu Wa'il while he was in the mosque of his tribe. We withdrew to a corner of the mosque. I said: Will you not tell me about these people whom Ali ؓ killed—why did they separate from him, and why did they respond to him when he called them, and when they separated from him, he deemed it lawful to fight them? He said: When we were at Siffin, the killing became intense among the people of Sham...... Then he mentioned a story. He said: Ali ؓ returned to Kufa, and the Khawarij said about him what they said, and they camped at Harura', and they were some ten thousand. Ali ؓ sent to them, adjuring them by God Almighty: Return to your caliph. What do you hold against him? Is it in division or judgment? They said: We fear entering into a trial. He said: Do not hasten to the error of this year for fear of the trial of next year. So they returned and said: Let him be over our region. If he accepts the arbitration, we will fight him as we fought the people of Sham at Siffin, and if he breaks it, we will fight with him. So they marched until they crossed Nahrawan. A group of them split off and began killing people. Their companions said: It was not for this that we separated from Ali. When their action reached Ali ؓ, he stood and said: Will you march against your enemy or return to those who have stayed behind in your homes? They said: Rather, we return to them. He said: Ali ؓ narrated that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: A group will come out from the direction of the east at a time of discord among the people. They will not consider your jihad with their jihad as anything, nor your prayer with their prayer as anything, nor your fasting with their fasting as anything. They will go out of the religion as an arrow goes out of the game. Their sign is a man whose upper arm is like a woman's breast. The closest of the two parties to the truth will kill them. Ali ؓ marched against them and fought them a severe fight. Ali's cavalry began to stand up to them, so he said: O people, if you are fighting them only for my sake, then by God, I have nothing to tell you. But if you are fighting for God Almighty, then let not this be your fighting. So they advanced upon them and killed them all. Then he said: Search for him. They searched but did not find him. Ali ؓ mounted his beast and came to a hollow in the ground, and there were dead bodies piled upon each other. He was extracted from beneath them, and he dragged him by his leg while the people watched. Ali ؓ said: I will not raid this year. He returned to Kufa and was killed. The people appointed al-Hasan b. Ali ؓ as caliph. Al-Hasan sent the pledge of allegiance to Muawiyah ؓ, and al-Hasan wrote about that to Qays b. Sa'd ؓ. Qays b. Sa'd stood among his companions and said: O people, two matters have come to you, and you must choose one of them: entering into a trial, or fighting without an imam. The people said: What is this? He said: Al-Hasan b. Ali has given the pledge of allegiance to Muawiyah. So the people returned and pledged allegiance to Muawiyah ؓ. Muawiyah had no concern except for those at al-Nahrawan. They began to come to him and pledge allegiance, until there remained of them three hundred and some, and they were the companions of al-Nukhaylah.
