قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الْحَفَرِيُّ، ثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ طَارِقٍ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ قَالَ:

إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةَ أُمَّةٌ مَرْحُومَةٌ، لَا عَذَابَ عَلَيْهَا إِلَّا مَا عَذَّبَتْ هِيَ أَنْفُسَهَا، قَالَتْ: قُلْتُ: وَكَيْفَ تُعَذِّبُ نَفْسَهَا ؟ قَالَ: أَمَا كَانَ يَوْمَ الْجَمَلِ عَذَابٌ ؟ أَمَا كَانَ يَوْمَ صِفِّينَ عَذَابٌ ؟ أَمَا كَانَ يَوْمَ النَّهَرِ عَذَابٌ

✧ This nation is a nation to whom mercy is shown; there is no punishment upon it except what it inflicts upon itself. She said: I said: 'How does it punish itself?' He said: 'Was not the Day of the Camel a punishment? Was not the Day of Siffin a punishment? Was not the Day of Nahrawan a punishment?'
