حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الْحَفَرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ طَارِقٍ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ:

إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةَ أُمَّةٌ مَرْحُومَةٌ، لَا عَذَابَ عَلَيْهَا إِلَّا مَا عَذَّبَتْ هِيَ أَنْفُسَهَا، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: وَكَيْفَ تُعَذِّبُ أَنْفُسَهَا ؟ قَالَ: أَمَا كَانَ يَوْمَ النَّهَرِ عَذَابٌ ؟ أَمَا كَانَ يَوْمَ الْجَمَلِ عَذَابٌ ؟ أَمَا كَانَ يَوْمَ صِفِّينَ عَذَابٌ ؟

✧ Indeed this ummah is a community that is shown mercy; it will have no punishment except what it inflicts upon itself. He said: I said: How does it punish itself? He said: Was there not punishment on the day of al-Nahar? Was there not punishment on the day of al-Jamal? Was there not punishment on the day of Siffin?
