✧ I returned with Muawiya ؓ from Siffin. Muawiya and Abu al-A'war al-Sulami were riding on one side, and Amr and his son were riding on another side, and I was between them, no one else but me. Sometimes I urged my mount toward these, and sometimes toward those. I heard Abdullah b. Amr ؓ say to his father: 'O my father, did you not hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to Ammar ؓ when he was building the mosque: "You are surely keen for reward"?' He said: 'Yes, by Allah ؓ.' And he ﷺ said: 'You are from the people of Paradise, and the transgressing party will kill you.' He said: 'Yes, I heard it.' He said: 'Then why did you kill him?' He said: 'He turned to Muawiya ؓ and said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, do you not hear what this one is saying?" He said: 'He mentioned it.' He said: 'Woe to you, you keep slipping in your speech. Did we kill him? Only those who brought him killed him.'
