✧ I charged at 'Ammar b. Yasir ؓ on the day of Siffin, pushed him, and threw him off his horse. A man from the people of Sham got to him before me, so he severed his head. We disputed before Mu'awiyah ؓ over the head and placed it before him, each of us claiming to have killed him and each seeking the reward for his head. 'Abd Allah b. 'Amr b. al-'As ؓ was with him. 'Abd Allah b. 'Amr b. al-'As ؓ said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to 'Ammar ؓ: The transgressing party will kill you. Give glad tidings to the killer of 'Ammar of the Fire.' So I let go of it from my hand and said: 'I did not kill him.' My companion also let go of it and said: 'I did not kill him.' When Mu'awiyah ؓ saw that, he turned to 'Abd Allah b. 'Amr ؓ and said: 'What made you say this?' He said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say something, so I wanted to say it.'
