✧ ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān ؓ sent for ʿAbdullāh b. Salām ؓ while he was besieged. He entered upon him and said to him: 'Raise your head and look at this opening, for the Messenger of God ﷺ looked down from it tonight.' He said: 'O ʿUthmān, have they besieged you?' I said: 'Yes.' He lowered a bucket for me and I drank from it, and indeed I feel its coolness on my liver. Then he ﷺ said: 'If you wish, I will call upon God Almighty and He will grant you victory over them, and if you wish, you may break your fast with us.' ʿAbdullāh ؓ said: 'I asked him: What did you choose?' He said: 'To break fast with him ﷺ.' ʿAbdullāh ؓ returned to his home, and when the day had fully risen, he said to his son: 'Go out and see what has happened to ʿUthmān ؓ, for it is not fitting that he be alive at this hour.' He returned to him and said: 'The man has been killed.'
