✧ When Uthman ؓ was besieged, he remained fasting that day. When it was time to break the fast, he asked them for fresh water. They said, 'You have this well,' and behold, it was a well into which filth was thrown. So he spent that night in his state without eating. When it was near dawn, I came to a neighbor woman of ours over connected rooftops and asked them for fresh water. I brought him a jug of water. When I descended, he ؓ was sleeping at the bottom of the stair, snoring. I woke him and said, 'This is fresh water I have brought you.' He ؓ raised his head, looked at the dawn, and said, 'I am fasting; I have entered the morning fasting.' I said, 'From what? I have not seen anyone bring you food or drink.' He said, 'The Messenger of God ﷺ looked down upon me from this roof with a bucket of water and said, "Drink, O Uthman." I drank and was quenched. Then he said, "Drink more." I drank until I was full. Then he ﷺ said, "The people will disapprove of you. If you leave them, you will break your fast with us."' She said: Then they entered upon him that very day and killed him ؓ.
