✧ Our Prophet and beloved ﷺ announced to us his own death—may my soul be his ransom—a month before his death. When the parting drew near, he ﷺ gathered us in the house of our mother Aisha ؓ. He ﷺ looked at us, and his eyes shed tears. He pronounced the testimony of faith, then said: 'Welcome to you. May Allah keep you alive, have mercy on you, shelter you, preserve you, aid you, benefit you, guide you, grant you success, grant you peace, accept you, provide for you, and raise you. I enjoin upon you fear of Allah, and I entrust you to Allah, and I appoint Him as a guardian over you. I make you witness that I am a clear warner to you, that you should not exalt yourselves over Allah in His servants and His lands. For Allah, Exalted be He, said to me and to you: "That is the abode of the Hereafter"—the verse—and He, Mighty and Exalted, said: "Is there not in Hell a dwelling for the arrogant?"' We said: When is the appointed time? He ﷺ said: 'The appointed time has drawn near, and the return is to Allah, to the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, to the Garden of Refuge, to the fullest cup, to the highest companion, and to the most pleasant life.' We said: Who will wash you? He ﷺ said: 'Men of my household, the nearest then the nearest.' We said: In what shall we shroud you? He ﷺ said: 'In these garments of mine, or garments of Egypt, or a Yemeni suit.' We said: Who will pray over you? He said: Then he ﷺ wept and we wept. He said: 'Gently, may Allah forgive you and reward you well on behalf of your Prophet. When you have washed me and shrouded me, place me on my bier in this house of mine, at the edge of this grave of mine. Then leave me for a while. The first to pray over me will be my friend and beloved Gabriel, then Michael, then Israfil, then the Angel of Death with all his hosts of angels. Then enter upon me in groups and pray over me and give greetings of peace. Do not harm me with excessive praise, nor with a cry, nor with a wail. Let the men of my household and their women begin the prayer over me, then you after. Convey my greetings of peace to those of my companions who are absent from me. Convey my greetings of peace to those of my brothers who enter with you into my religion. I make you witness that I have sent peace upon whoever follows me in my religion from this day to the Day of Resurrection.' We said: Who will place you in your grave? He ﷺ said: 'My family with many angels, who see you from where you do not see them.'
