The Prophet ﷺ was wrapped in a Yemeni garment (ḥullah) that belonged to ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Bakr, then it was removed from him, and he was shrouded in three white Saḥūlī cloths from Yemen, among which there was no turban and no shirt. Then ʿAbdullāh took the garment and said: "I will be shrouded in it." Then he said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not shrouded in it, yet I am to be shrouded in it?" So he gave it in charity.

machine translationHishām b. ʿUrwah narrated it, and there is disagreement about him regarding its text (matn). Al-Darāwardī narrated it from Hishām, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah: that the Prophet ﷺ was shrouded in three Saḥūlī garments, and a niche-grave (laḥd) was dug for him and mud bricks were set up over him. A group of Hishām's students contradicted him, among them al-Thawrī, Abū Ḍamrah, ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAmr al-Raqqī, Shuʿayb b. Isḥāq, ʿAbdullāh b. Numayr, ʿUmar b. ʿAlī, Abū Muʿāwiyah and Zamʿah b. Ṣāliḥ, from Hishām; they did not mention in it the niche-grave or the mud bricks. Al-Darāwardī alone related that from Hishām. Makḥūl also narrated it from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, and he too did not mention in it the niche-grave or the mud bricks. That is the preserved (maḥfūẓ) version from Hishām b. ʿUrwah.
