✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent me, Abu Qatadah, an ally of theirs from the Ansar, and Abdullah b. Atik to Ibn Abi al-Huqayq to kill him. We went out at night, tracked their doors, and hung them on them from outside. Then we gathered the keys. The group climbed into the palm trees, and I and Abdullah b. Atik entered the stairs of Ibn Abi al-Huqayq. Abdullah b. Atik spoke, and Ibn Abi al-Huqayq said: 'May your mother lose you, Abdullah! How did you get to this land? Get up and open for him, for a nobleman is not turned away from his door at this hour.' She got up, and I said to Abdullah b. Atik: 'Go ahead.' He drew his sword upon them. His wife went to scream, so he drew his sword upon her, but then he remembered the saying of the Messenger of God ﷺ that he forbade killing women and children, so he refrained. Abdullah b. Unays said: I entered upon him in his upper room, and I stood looking at the extreme whiteness of his skin in the darkness of the night. When he saw me, he took a pillow and covered himself with it. I went to raise the sword to strike him, but I could not because of the shortness of the room, so I stabbed him with a thrust. Then I went out, and my companion said: 'Did you do it?' I said: 'Yes.' He entered and stood over him. Then we went out and descended the stairs, and Abdullah b. Atik fell on the stairs and said: 'Oh my leg! My leg is broken.' I said: 'There is nothing wrong with your leg,' and I put down my bow and carried him. Abdullah was short and slight, so I brought him down and found his leg was fine. We went on until we caught up with our companions. The woman cried out: 'Oh father of the house!' and the people of Khaybar rose up to kill him. I remembered the place of my bow and said: 'I will not return until I take my bow.' I went back and found the people of Khaybar in an uproar, and they were saying nothing but 'Who killed Ibn Abi al-Huqayq?' I did not look at the face of any person nor did any person look at my face but I said as they said: 'Who killed Ibn Abi al-Huqayq?' until I came to the stairs. I climbed up with the people, took my bow, and then caught up with my companions. We traveled at night and hid by day. When we hid during the day, we set a watchman to look out for us until we approached al-Madinah. When we were at al-Bayda', I was their watchman. Then I signaled to them with my garment, and they went down and ran briskly. I descended following their tracks and caught up with them until we reached al-Madinah. My companions said to me: 'Did you see anything?' I said: 'No, but I saw what overtook you of exhaustion, and I wanted fear to carry you.' We came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was delivering a sermon to the people. He said: 'The faces have succeeded.' We said: 'May your face succeed, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'Did you kill him?' We said: 'Yes.' He called for the sword with which he was killed and said: 'This is his food in the edges of the sword.'
