✧ On the night of the confederates, the people suffered severe hardship and cold such as they had never experienced before. The Messenger of God ﷺ stood praying, and he prayed as long as God willed. Then he said: Who will stand now and bring us news of the enemy? God will whiten his face on the Day of Resurrection. By God, no man among them was able to stand because of the hardship they were in. Then he ﷺ prayed as long as God willed, then said: Who will stand now and bring us news of the enemy? God will place him with me in Paradise. By God, no man among them was able to stand because of the hardship they were in. Then he ﷺ said: O so-and-so, stand. He said: By the One who sent down the Book upon you, I will not come to you now. Then he ﷺ said: O Hudhayfah, stand. Hudhayfah said: I wanted to swear as my companion had sworn, but the Prophet ﷺ said: You are indeed swearers. So I rose to him ﷺ, and he said to me: Go and bring us news of the enemy, and do not do anything until you return to me. Hudhayfah said: He prayed for me that God would protect me from before me and behind me until I returned. I went, and between me and them was a dry salt marsh, and I had hardly crossed it when I found them in a great state. Abu Sufyan was warming himself by a fire of theirs from the cold, and a small fire of theirs sometimes flared up and sometimes died down. When it flared up, I saw those around it. I said: What am I waiting for? This is an enemy of God, and I have seen his position. I took an arrow from my quiver and placed it in the bow, but then I remembered the Prophet's ﷺ words: Do not do anything until you return to me. So I threw it back into the quiver. Then I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him what they were doing, and he ﷺ began to praise God Almighty. Then God, Mighty and Majestic, sent the wind, and he mentioned the verse: O you who believe, remember the favor of God upon you... (to the end of the verse).
