✧ They gathered with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he walked with them until he reached Baqi' al-Gharqad on a moonlit night. He said: Go forth in the name of Allah. O Allah, help them. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned to his house. They went on until they reached his fortress, meaning Ka'b b. al-Ashraf. Abu Na'ilah called out to him, and he came down to him while he was recently married. His wife said to him: You are a warrior, and a man of war does not come down at such an hour. He said to her: It is Abu Na'ilah. By Allah, if he found me sleeping, he would not wake me. She said: By Allah, I recognize evil in his voice. He said to her: If a young man is called to a thrust, he answers. So he came down to them, and they talked for a while. Then they said: If we walked to Shi'b al-'Ajuz and talked tonight, for we have not done that for a long time. He said: Yes. They went out walking. Then Abu Na'ilah felt his hand in the side of his head and said: I have never seen perfume as fragrant as tonight. Then he walked for a while, then repeated it until he was reassured. He put his hand into the side of his head and grabbed his hair, then said: Strike the enemy of Allah. Their swords fell upon him in confusion. The enemy of Allah screamed a scream, and no fortress remained but a fire was lit on it. Al-Harith's leg was injured. Muhammad b. Maslamah said: When I saw that the swords were not effective, I remembered a short sword in my scabbard. I took it and placed it on his navel and pressed on it until it reached his pubic area, and he fell. Then we left and took the road past Banu Umayyah, then Banu Qurayzah, then Bu'ath, then we traveled at night through the Harrah of al-'Urayd. Al-Harith was delayed and bleeding, so we stopped for him. Then we carried him until we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the end of the night while he was praying. He came out to us, and we informed him of the killing of the enemy of Allah. He ﷺ spat on the wound of al-Harith, and we returned with him to his house. The people dispersed to their camps. When morning came, the Jews feared because of our attack on the enemy of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever you find of the men of the Jews, kill him. Muhayyisah b. Mas'ud jumped on Ibn Sunaynah, a man from the Jewish merchants, who used to trade with them and mix with them, and killed him. Huwayyisah b. Mas'ud, who was then a polytheist and older than him, began to beat him and say: O enemy of Allah, you killed him? By Allah, there is much fat in your belly from his wealth. He said: By Allah, a man ordered me to kill him, and if he ordered me to kill you, I would strike your neck. He said: By Allah, if Muhammad ordered you to kill me, would you kill me? He said: Yes, by Allah. He said: By Allah, a religion that has brought you to this is indeed amazing. Thus the first Islam of Huwayyisah came from the words of his brother. Muhayyisah composed poetry about that.
