وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى: حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ إِيَادٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ ؓ، قَالَ:

لَمَّا انْطَلَقَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ مُسْتَخْفِيَيْنِ فِي الْغَارِ، مَرَّا بِعَبْدٍ يَرْعَى غَنَمًا، فَاسْتَسْقَا مِنَ اللَّبَنِ، فَقَالَ: وَاللهِ مَا لِي شَاةٌ تُحْلَبُ، غَيْرَ أَنَّ هَاهُنَا عَنَاقًا حَمَلَتْ أَوَانَ الشِّتَاءِ، فَمَا بَقِيَ لَهَا لَبَنٌ وَقَدِ اهْتُجِنَتْ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: ائْتِنَا بِهَا، فَدَعَا عَلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِالْبَرَكَةِ ثُمَّ حَلَبَ عُسًّا فَسَقَى أَبَا بَكْرٍ ؓ، ثُمَّ حَلَبَ آخَرَ فَسَقَى الرَّاعِيَ، ثُمَّ حَلَبَ فَشَرِبَ ﷺ، فَقَالَ الْعَبْدُ: بِاللهِ مَنْ أَنْتَ ؟ مَا رَأَيْتُ مِثْلَكَ قَطُّ، قَالَ: وَتُرَاكَ إِنْ أَخْبَرْتُكَ تَكْتُمُ عَلَيَّ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ ﷺ: فَإِنِّي مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللهِ قَالَ: أَنْتَ الَّذِي تَزْعُمُ قُرَيْشٌ أَنَّكَ صَابِئٌ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: إِنَّهُمْ لَيَقُولُونَ ذَلِكَ، قَالَ: فَإِنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ لَرَسُولُ اللهِ، وَأَنَّ مَا جِئْتَ بِهِ حَقٌّ، وَأَنَّهُ لَيْسَ يَفْعَلُ مَا فَعَلْتَهُ إِلَّا نَبِيٌّ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَتَّبِعُكَ ؟ قَالَ ﷺ: لَا، حَتَّى تَسْمَعَ أَنَّا قَدْ ظَهَرْنَا، فَإِذَا بَلَغَكَ ذَلِكَ فَاخْرُجْ، فَتَبِعَهُ بَعْدَمَا خَرَجَ مِنَ الْغَارِ

Translation

✧ When the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr ؓ set out, hiding in the cave, they passed by a slave tending sheep, and they asked him for some milk to drink. He said: By Allah, I have no ewe to be milked, except that here is a young she-goat that became pregnant at the beginning of winter, so she has no milk left; she has aborted her young. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Bring her to us. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ supplicated for blessing upon her, then he milked a bowl and gave Abu Bakr ؓ to drink. Then he milked another and gave the shepherd to drink. Then he milked and drank ﷺ. The slave said: By Allah, who are you? I have never seen anyone like you. He said: Do you think that if I tell you, you will keep it secret? He said: Yes. He ﷺ said: I am Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah. He said: Are you the one whom Quraysh claim is a Sābi’? He ﷺ said: They do say that. He said: I bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah, and that what you have brought is true, and that no one does what you have done except a prophet. Then he said: Shall I follow you? He ﷺ said: No, not until you hear that we have prevailed. When that reaches you, then come out. So he followed him after he left the cave.
