✧ In the pre-Islamic era, the Kaaba was built of loose stones, with no mud. It was only as high as a young goat could leap over, and it was not roofed. Its covering was simply placed on top and let hang down. The Black Corner was set on its wall, visible. It had two corners, like a ring, square on one side and round on the other. A ship came from the land of the Romans, and when it was near Jeddah, it broke apart. Quraysh went out to take its timber and found a Roman with it. They took the timber, and he gave it to them. The ship had been heading for Abyssinia, and the Roman on the ship was a merchant. They brought the timber and the Roman. Quraysh said, 'We will build the House of our Lord with this timber.' When they wanted to demolish it, behold, there was a snake on the wall of the House, white-bellied and black-backed. Every time someone approached the House to demolish it or take a stone from it, it rushed at him with its mouth open. Quraysh gathered at the Maqam and cried out to Allah, exalted is He. He said: They said, 'Our Lord, we are not afraid. We intended to honor and adorn Your House. If You approve of that, then so be it; otherwise, whatever You decide, do.' They heard an answer from the sky, and behold, there was a bird larger than a vulture, black-backed, with white belly and legs. It sank its talons into the snake's belly and carried it off, dragging it with its tail hanging down, until it took it toward Ajyad. Quraysh demolished it, and they began rebuilding it with stones from the valley, carrying them on their necks, and they raised it twenty cubits into the air. While the Prophet ﷺ was carrying stones from Ajyad, wearing a striped cloak, the cloak was too tight for him, and part of it slipped from his shoulder, so his private area was visible because of the smallness of the cloak. A voice called out, 'O Muhammad, cover your private area.' He was never seen naked after that. Between its building and what Allah revealed to him was fifteen years. When the army of al-Husayn b. Numayr came... and he mentioned its burning in the time of Ibn al-Zubayr ؓ.
