Translation

✧ In the pre-Islamic era, the Ka'bah was built of unshaped stones without mud. It was only high enough for a young goat to leap over it. It had no roof; its cloth coverings were simply laid on top and draped down. The Black Stone was placed on its wall, visible. It had two corners, like the shape of this ring. A ship came from the land of the Romans, and when they were near Jeddah, the ship broke apart. Quraysh went out to take its wood, and they found a Roman there. They took the wood, and he gave it to them. The ship had been heading for Abyssinia. The Roman who was on the ship was a carpenter. They brought the wood and they brought the Roman. Quraysh said: 'We will build the House of our Lord with this wood.' When they wanted to demolish it, there was a snake on the wall of the House, like a piece of a beam, black-backed and white-bellied. Whenever anyone approached the House to demolish it or take from its stones, it would rush at him with its mouth open. Quraysh gathered at the sanctuary and cried out to God, saying: 'Our Lord, we were not alarmed [without cause]; we intended to honor Your House and set it in order. If You are pleased with that, then [let it be], otherwise whatever You will, do.' Then they heard a lowing sound in the sky, and there was a bird larger than a vulture, black-backed and white-bellied and white-legged. It sank its talons into the back of the snake's neck and went off dragging it, its tail—larger than such-and-such—drooping, until it went with it toward Ajyad. Then Quraysh demolished it and began to rebuild it with stones from the valley, which Quraysh carried on their necks. They raised it twenty cubits into the sky. While the Prophet ﷺ was carrying stones from Ajyad, wearing a striped cloth, the cloth became too tight for him. He went to put the cloth on his shoulder, and his private parts became exposed because the cloth was too small. He was called: 'O Muhammad, cover your private parts.' He was never seen naked after that. Between [this event] and God's sending down [revelation] to him was five years, and between his departure [i.e., the start of his mission] and its building was fifteen years." Then when the army of al-Husayn b. Numayr came, he mentioned its burning in the time of Ibn al-Zubayr.
