✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to attend the gatherings of the polytheists. He said: He heard two angels behind him, one of them saying to the other, 'Let us go so that we may stand behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said, 'How can we stand behind him when his last contact was with touching the idols?' After that, he never attended the gatherings of the polytheists again.

machine translationI say: People rejected this hadith from ʿUthmān b. Abī Shaybah and went to excess about it. The objectionable (munkar) part in it is his saying, from the angel, that he said, 'His last association was with touching the idols.' Its apparent meaning is that the Prophet ﷺ himself touched them, but that is not what is intended. Rather, what is intended is that the angel objected to his witnessing the polytheists' touching of their idols.

machine translationAbū Zurʿah al-Rāzī transmitted it from ʿUthmān, but he differed from the group in its chain: he transmitted it from Sufyān b. ʿAbdullāh b. Ziyād b. Ḥudayr instead of Sufyān al-Thawrī. He said: In my view this is closer to the correct.
