حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ الضَّبِّيُّ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ:

كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَشْهَدُ مَعَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ مَشَاهِدَهُمْ، قَالَ: فَسَمِعَ مَلَكَيْنِ خَلْفَهُ وَأَحَدُهُمَا يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ: اذْهَبْ بِنَا حَتَّى نَقُومَ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ: كَيْفَ نَقُومُ خَلْفَهُ وَإِنَّمَا عَهْدُهُ بِاسْتِلَامِ الْأَصْنَامِ قَبْلُ ؟ قَالَ: فَلَمْ يَعُدْ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ أَنْ يَشْهَدَ مَعَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ مَشَاهِدَهُمْ

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to attend the gatherings of the polytheists. He said: He heard two angels behind him, one of them saying to his companion: Come with us so that we may stand behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: He said: How can we stand behind him when his only recent contact was with the touching of the idols before? He said: After that, he never again attended the gatherings of the polytheists.
