I was the firstborn of my mother, and she carried me as the heaviest thing women carry, until she began complaining to her companions of the weight she felt. My mother saw in a dream that what was in her womb was a light. She said: I began following the light with my eyes, and the light went ahead of my sight until it illuminated for me the easts of the earth and its wests. Then she gave birth to me. When I grew up, idols were made hateful to me, and poetry was made hateful to me. I was nursed among Banu Jusham b. Bakr. While I was one day in the bottom of a valley with companions of mine among the boys, behold, a group of three came with a basin of gold filled with light and snow. They took me from among my companions, and my companions fled until they reached the edge of the valley. They turned to the group and said, "What do you want with this boy? He is not one of us. He is from Banu Sayyid Quraysh, and he is being nursed among us as an orphan boy with no father. What would killing him avail you? But if you must do something, choose any of us you wish, and we will come to you and you can take us in his place. Leave this boy." They did not answer them. When the boys saw that the people would not answer them, they ran away quickly to the settlement to inform them and call for help against the people. One of them came to me and laid me down gently on the ground, then split open what was between my chest and the end of my pubic area while I was watching, and I felt nothing of that. Then he took out my intestines and washed them with that snow, washing them thoroughly. Then he returned them to their place. Then the second one came and said to his companion, "Step aside." Then he inserted his hand into my inside and took out my heart while I was watching. He split it open and took out a black clot and threw it away. Then he gestured with his hand to his right as if reaching for something. Then he brought the seal in his hand, made of the light of prophethood and wisdom, dazzling the eyes of onlookers. He sealed my heart and it became full of light. He sealed it and returned it to its place. I felt the coolness of that seal in my heart for a long time. Then the third one came and moved his companion aside. He passed his hand between my chest and the end of my pubic area, and the split closed by the permission of Allah, Most High. Then he took me by the hand and raised me from my place gently. Then the first one who had split my belly said, "Weigh him against ten of his community." They weighed me and I outweighed them. Then he said, "Weigh him against a hundred of his community." They weighed me and I outweighed them. Then he said, "Weigh him against a thousand of his community." They weighed me and I outweighed them. He said, "Leave him, for if you weighed him against his entire community, he would outweigh them." Then they came to me and embraced me to their chests, kissed my head and between my eyes, and said, "O beloved, do not be afraid. If you knew what good is intended for you, your eye would be comforted." He said: While we were thus, behold, the settlement came with all its people, and my wet-nurse was at the front of the settlement crying out at the top of her voice, saying, "O poor weak one!" He said: They crowded around me kissing me and saying, "How wonderful you are as a weak one!" Then she said, "O lonely one!" He said: They crowded around me kissing me and saying, "How wonderful you are as a lonely one! You are not lonely, for Allah is with you, and His angels, and the believers of the people of the earth." Then she said, "O orphan! You were taken advantage of among your companions and killed because of your weakness." They crowded around me and embraced me to their chests and kissed my head, and said, "How wonderful you are as an orphan! How honored you are with Allah, Mighty and Majestic! If you knew what good is intended for you." He said: They reached the edge of the valley. When my wet-nurse saw me, she said, "O my son, do I see you still alive?" She came and bent over me, embracing me to her chest. By the One in whose hand is my soul, I was in her lap, she had embraced me to herself, and my hand was in the hand of one of them, and I thought the people could see them, but they could not. Some of the settlement came and said, "This boy has been touched by madness or a visitation from the jinn. Take him to the soothsayer to look at him and treat him." I said to him, "O you, there is nothing wrong with me as you claim. I see myself sound, my heart healthy, and there is no defect in me." My father—meaning the husband of my wet-nurse—said, "Do you not see that my son's speech is sound? I hope there is no harm in my son." The people agreed to take me to the soothsayer. They carried me until they brought me to him. They told him my story. He said, "Be quiet until I hear from the boy, for he knows best about his affair." So I told him my story from beginning to end. When he heard my words, he embraced me to his chest and cried out at the top of his voice, "O Arabs, kill this boy and kill me with him! By al-Lat and al-'Uzza, if you leave him, he will change your religion, make fools of your minds and the minds of your fathers, oppose your command, and bring you a religion the like of which you have never heard." He said: My wet-nurse snatched me from his hand and said, "You are more foolish and crazier than him. If I had known this would come from you, I would not have brought him to you." Then they carried me and returned me to my family. I woke up saddened by what had been done to me, and the trace of the split between my chest and the end of my pubic area was like a shoelace. That is the truth of my saying and the beginning of my affair. The 'Amiri said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that your affair is true. Tell me about things I will ask you." He ﷺ said, "Ask about yourself." He said: And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say to questioners before that, "Ask about whatever appears to you." That day he said to the 'Amiri, "Ask about yourself," and he spoke to him in the dialect of Banu 'Amir, and he spoke to him in what he knew. The 'Amiri said...
