✧ Virtue of al-Nabigha al-Ja'di ᴿᴬ

قَالَ الْحَارِثُ: حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، حَدَّثَنِي الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ، حَدَّثَنِي مَنْ سَمِعَ النَّابِغَةَ، يَقُولُ:

أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَأَنْشَدْتُهُ قَوْلِي: وَإِنَّا لَقَوْمٌ مَا نُعَوِّدُ خَيْلَنَا إِذَا مَا الْتَقَيْنَا أَنْ تَحِيدَ وَتَنْفِرَا وَتُنْكِرُ يَوْمَ الرَّوْعِ أَلْوَانَ خَيْلِنَا مِنَ الطَّعْنِ حَتَّى تَحْسَبَ الْجَوْنَ أَشْقَرَا وَلَيْسَ بِمَعْرُوفٍ لَنَا أَنْ نَرُدَّهَا صِحَاحًا وَلَا مُسْتَنْكَرٌ أَنْ يُعَفَّرَا بَلَغْنَا السَّمَاءَ مَجْدُنَا وَجُدُودُنَا وَإِنَّا لَنَبْغِي فَوْقَ ذَلِكَ مَظْهَرًا قَالَ: فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: إِلَى أَيْنَ ؟ قُلْتُ: إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ، قَالَ: نَعَمْ، إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ تَعَالَى. قَالَ ؓ: فَلَمَّا أَنْشَدْتُهُ ﷺ: وَلَا خَيْرَ فِي حِلْمٍ إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ بَوَادِرُ تَحْمِي صَفْوَهُ أَنْ يُكَدَّرَا وَلَا خَيْرَ فِي جَهْلٍ إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ أَرِيبٌ إِذَا مَا أُورِدَ الْأَمْرُ أَصْدَرَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: لَا يَفْضُضُ اللهُ فَاكَ. قَالَ: فَكَانَ ؓ مِنْ أَحْسَنِ النَّاسِ ثَغْرًا، وَكَانَ إِذَا سَقَطَتْ لَهُ سِنٌّ نَبَتَتْ

✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ and recited to him my verse: We are a people who do not accustom our horses, when we meet, to swerve and flee. And on the day of terror the colors of our horses are unrecognizable from the stabbing, until you think the dark bay is a sorrel. It is not known of us to return them sound, nor is it disapproved that they be bloodied. Our glory and our forefathers reached the sky, and we seek above that a place to appear. He said: Then the Prophet ﷺ said: To where? I said: To Paradise. He said: Yes, if God the Exalted wills. He ؓ said: And when I recited to him ﷺ: There is no good in forbearance if it has no sudden acts that protect its purity from being turbid. And there is no good in ignorance if it has no intelligent man who, when the matter is brought, sets it right. The Prophet ﷺ said: May God not break your mouth. He said: And he ؓ was among the people with the most beautiful set of teeth, and when a tooth fell out, another grew.
