So Ali ؓ took the door, and Umar ؓ came and sought permission. He said, "O Ali, seek permission for me to see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Ali ؓ said, "There is no permission for anyone over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So Umar ؓ went back, thinking that this was due to displeasure from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Umar ؓ could not bear it, so he returned and said, "Seek permission for me from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said, "There is no permission for anyone over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He ؓ said, "Why?" He ؓ said, "Because visitors from the angels are with him, and they asked their Lord to visit him." He ؓ said, "And how many are they, O Ali?"
