✧ I went up to Umar b. al-Khattab ؓ and said: "Come down from my father's pulpit and go to your father's pulpit." He ؓ said: "My father had no pulpit." He ؓ then took me by the hand and I began to turn pebbles in my hand. When he came down, he took me to his house and said: "Who ordered you to do this?" I said: "No one ordered me." He said: "You made us become close to you, you kept coming to us." He said: Then one day I came to him while he was alone with Muawiyah ؓ, and Ibn Umar ؓ came and went back. When I saw him go back, I went back. Later he met me and said: "I did not see you coming to us." I said: "I did come, but you were alone with Muawiyah ؓ, and Ibn Umar ؓ came and went back. When I saw him go back, I went back." Umar ؓ said: "You are more entitled to permission than Abdullah b. Umar. You are only above our heads. We see none but Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and you." He said: And he put his hand on his head.

machine translationḤammād b. Zayd narrated it from Yaḥyā, from ʿUbayd b. Ḥunayn, from al-Ḥusayn, from ʿUmar. Ibn ʿUyaynah also narrated it from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, but he did not preserve its chain (isnād) accurately and transmitted it as a mursal report from ʿUmar, that he said to al-Ḥusayn: "And who made the hair grow on the head other than you?" The hadith is Ḥammād b. Zayd's, because he preserved its chain accurately.
