✧ When Nahawand was conquered, the Muslims took captives from the Jews. The head of the exilarch came and received the Jewish captives. A man among the Muslims had obtained a beautiful, radiant slave girl. He said to me: 'Would you walk with me to this person? Perhaps he will set a price for me for this slave girl.' So I went with him, and we entered upon an arrogant old man who had an interpreter. He said to a man with him: 'Ask this slave girl: has this Arab had intercourse with her?' He said: 'I saw that he became jealous when he saw her beauty, so he spoke to her in his own language, and I understood what he said. I said to him: 'You have sinned by what you find in your Book, by asking this slave girl about what is behind her clothes.' He said to me: 'You lie. What do you know of what is in my Book?' He said: I said: 'I know your Book better than you.' He said: 'You know my Book better than me?' I said: 'Yes, I know your Book better than you.' He said: 'Who is this?' They said: 'Abd Allah b. Salam.' He said: 'So I left him that day, and he sent a messenger to me saying: 'You must come to me by an oath,' and he sent me a mount. He said: 'So I went to him seeking reward, hoping that he would embrace Islam. He detained me for three days, while I read the Torah to him and he wept. I said to him: 'By Allah, he is indeed the prophet whom you find in your Book.' He said to me: 'What should I do with the Jews?' He said: I said: 'The Jews will not avail you anything against Allah.' But he refused to embrace Islam, and wretchedness overcame him.'
